With the orchestra and choir of Polyphony and a strong solo section (soprano Carolyn Sampson was a last minute replacement for the indisposed Emma Kirkby), Layton’s annual Messiah has met with wide critical acclaim, and this year was no exception. Upbeat tempos where necessary gave rhythmic impetus and drive, accentuating the contrast with the oratorio’s more poignant reflections. Good vocal projection and characterisation drew the audience into the performing fold, while the excellent trumpet solo and a good blast from the St John’s organ in the closing sections rounded off an exhilarating performance.
